Wheelchair Winterization System
Exhibited at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, the Wheelchair Winterization System is a two-part system designed to enable a wheelchair propelled by its occupant to travel through up to six inches of snow. The system uses strips of paddles that are affixed using the wheel spokes to pull the chair through snow. Several forms of ski type devices were developed to allow the front caster wheels to ride over snow. It was essential that the system when installed not affect indoor use.
