As equipment designers we need to have empathy with the people for whom the product is intended. Nowhere is this more true than when we are working on adaptive, assistive, or universally designed products.
We believe strongly that we should never design or deliver a product that we would be unwilling to use ourselves for its intended purpose.
Whenever humanly possible, form and function should not be separated. Having a device be both attractive to the end-user and fully meet said user’s needs is not a desirable goal, but a necessity of its own right.
Wherever doing so does not adversely affect the function or affordability of a given design, devices designed by us need to be sustainable, both economically and ecologically.
Brigantian Designs rejects the notion of planned obsolescence as harmful both to the environment and the end-users. We also believe that planned obsolescence is harmful to the user/provider relationship.
When interacting with disabled clients it is essential to remain cognizant of the client as a disabled person and not simply a manifestation of a disability. Custom or one-off designs for a disabled individual need to address the desires of the person, and in some instances the person’s care provider(s) whenever possible while still delivering a reasonable, affordable, and functional device.
We are also committed to maintaining a reasonable economic bottom line in our design and business dealings, both for our clients and ourselves.
